Origin and diffusion

Area of origin: Versilia, North-western Toscana, central Italy.
The Massese is a carpet wool breed kept for both milk and meat production. Belonging to the Apennine group it is similar to the Garfagnina and grey or brown with a dark head.

Morphological and economic characteristics

Size: medium
Height at the withers:
- Male: 85 cm
- Female: 77 cm
Weight:
- Male: 90 kg
- Female: 65 kg

Uni coloured: black, grey or brown with darker head.
Both sexes are horned and show a distinctive roman-nose.
Uses: milk (main), meat.
