Origin and diffusion

The Rustica Calabrese is an Italian breed reared in the province of Cosenza (Calabria). It presents heterogeneous features, probably it has been mixed with Maltese and Garganica breeds. After rearing in the mountains, it is brought to lower altitudes during the winter.

Morphological and economic characteristics

Height at the withers:
- Male: 75-80 cm
- Female: 60 cm
Weight:
- Male: 65-70 kg
- Female: 45-50 kg

The coat is variously coloured, white, brown or black; with or without horns.
Both milk and meat production (kids slaughter at 6-7 kg).
